Review Ramaiya Vastavaiya: The Story Brings Back A Real Rom-Com

Jeene-Laga-Hoon-Ramaiya-Vastavaiya

So I heard a dime and dozen critical reviews of Ramaiya Vastavaiya. The critics left no stone unturned to tell us that the film is crap. Unfortunately we all know the story behind these reviews. So as a fan of motion cinema I never take these seriously. They are flawed mostly and are myopic. The same critics went gaga over porn and poor taste comedies like Delhi Belly and Masti ( a super semi-porn sequel is about to come). Just goes to show the quality that we have in town.

I went and saw Ramaiya Vastavaiya for myself and though I must admit the film has bits and pieces picked up from Maine Pyaar Kiya and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kiya, still it kicks of the humour inside you and gives you a great watch of 2 hours and some odd minutes. The performances, especially from Girish Kumar, the male lead was fabulous and Shruti Hassan was as usual refreshing. The other cast that completed the film was ensemble including the likes of Poonam Dhillon, Randhir Kapoor and Sonu Sood and we all know their capabilities as actors. Keeping all this in mind here are two reasons why such films need to be made.

1. We live in an era where comedy is restrained to either semi-porn or poor taste. I gave a couple of examples above and both were monstrous hits. In times like these, a film like Ramaiya Vastavaiya is fabulous to watch with your parents. I know I call upon the wrath of the modern folks here who would call me backward but so be it.

2. Who do we make films for and who do these reviewers talk to while reviewing a film? Big questions these. Frankly, even though a huge chunk of revenues have started to come from multiplexes audiences, we all know films last longer than a week still at single screen theaters in small and medium sized towns. The film completely grasped these audiences mind and hats off to Prabhu Deva for this. He has produced a classic and if you want to test just go and watch the applause in a theater in Tatanagar when Girish wins in the end against his brother-in-law Sonu Sood or when comic scenes happen. Not that these audiences don’t get titilated easily with Masti and Jism but the moment you produce vegetarian comedy like this, you strengthen the life of your film in a theater and increase audience base too.

The review would be incomplete unless we speak of Prabhu Deva. The man chose the script perfectly. Ramaiya Vastavaiya is a remake of his own 2005 Telugu film, Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, which was a remake of the 1989 Salman Khan starrer, Maine Pyaar Kiya. Then he made sure we all loved the lead actor because if the battering and abuses that were hurled upon him. He completed the film with a lot of finesse and in a film with so much inspiration from everywhere else, a lesser mortal than Prabhu Deva would have surely failed. The way he makes sure everything in the film is made larger and than life is astounding. Colors used are awesome and the village landscape used is also brilliantly shot.

Overall a good watch with the family and I would go in with 3 out of 5 for this one. Frankly one more point for the director Prabhu Deva.

6 Reasons Why Sanju Baba Should Not Be Spared

Image

Some say he has faced enough hardships in 20 years to be pardoned; some say he has done some good films which worked for societal improvement and hence has worked for societal good, some go to the extreme saying let bygones be bygones, he is a changed man so pardon him. I though find Six very important reasons why Sanjay Dutt should not be pardoned.

  1. The fact that he was in touch and talking to Anees Ibrahim, brother of none other than Dawood Ibrahim is now in public domain. It is also known that he had some licensed weapons and still went on to procure AK 56 for self protection (these unlicensed). It is important to quote MN Singh here, the JCP Mumbai Police who investigated the blast. He said “The explanation doesn’t cut any ice. One doesn’t go running for help to gangsters for self-protection. There are government agencies to fall back on and in his case it was easy to get government help. As the son of Nargis and Sunil Dutt, a Congress MP, Sanjay could have asked the government for help. And here is the most troubling question: why did Dutt keep hand grenades? The ‘self protection’ argument can hardly be used to defend this act.”
  1. It is also a well known fact that Sanjay did took possession of a huge bogey of armaments which might have been used for the then terrorist incident. Do we still need to pardon such individuals.
  1. There were others in the case with activities much less troubled than that of our Munnabhai. A few – including Baba Mussa Chauhan and Magnum video owner Samir Hingora – who went to Dutt’s house to deliver the consignment of arms. Others like Manzoor Ahmed, whose car was used to bring back the weapons from Dutt’s residence, and an old woman (Zaibunissa Kazi), who kept the consignment in her house for a few days. All these people and some more were booked under TADA (Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act). Sanjay though got a reprieve from TADA (reasons best known to the judiciary). Do we still want him to not complete the remaining period in his punishment.
  1. The apex court in its judgment clearly ruled out chances of Probation considering the nature of the crime. I am a layman and from a very layman point of view, I would like to say here that in a criminal justice system like India where almost all verdicts of importance come in after at least a decade, should all criminals be let go if a few people who are dependent on him form an opinion that he has changed into a good man in the interim. Yes, you read it write, I actually alleged the film industry backing him, backing him because there is huge money floating on his films and many in the same industry have formerly been known to dance in the D-Parties in Dubai etc. Also, I can argue on the same count that others in the interim might also have changed so let’s free everyone. Why does someone with tumour in her body, at 70-years of age suffer inside the Jail when a man known to be reckless in his life’s younger age so scot-free.
  1. Finally, this entire request falls flat on the face when we think of so many undertrials languishing in Indian jails. You know why most of them are there? Because they cannot afford a lawyer and hence spend years even after being not being proven guilty. Hence how can a Sanjay Dutt who remained outside for a good 18 years out of 20 could be let off because a few think he is a changed man.
  1. He was 33-years-old when he committed that crime, an age all of us are expected to be mature. What was he thinking while keeping grenades and ak-56 at his house? If this ain’t a huge crime, what is? Now imagine the circumstances. One of the accused in the Delhi rape was 17-years-old on the day of the crime. He was uneducated, did not come from the so-called civil society, had every reason to behave rash but we unanimously irrespective of his age wanted his blood. Sanjay Dutt was educated, came from the elitist civil society, was son of a illustrious father and sat in the most coveted circles. I know you would point out to the nature of the crime here but one-second, did not 257-people die in the Mumbai blast so wasn’t the crime as gory as anything else that you saw.

Let’s be honest here. If today this man is pardoned, tomorrow Salman’s followers would come out saying he started Being Human, see he is doing societal good, he does not bang actresses houses too these days. He is a changed man, please leave him (that if he is pronounced guilty in the hit-and-run case). Do we want a scenario like that or we better respect the apex court ruling. Let the man face his actions, let him stay in jail, in any case its far too less for the crimes he commit.

Himmatwala: Bum Pe Lat for the Makers

So basically Sajid Khan picked up an already bad film, added pathetic twists to it and made it crass.

I was warned by my mom before watching this one. She had seen the one made in the 80’s and said it was bad taste. I though, being me, wanted to experience anything before making a value judgement. How I wish I would have taken the sane advice and avoided this ridiculously preposterous flick.

The need for a comic flick in today’s stressed out world is totally understandable but torture in the name of comedy isn’t. For the first time in the history of a comedy film, the run-time actually looked to be between 24-48 hours for a just over 2-hour flick.

For the actors, only God knows what has happened to Ajay Devgn. One he changes his name and removes the ‘a’ that so helped in pronouncing his name. He has started to do films like Son Of Sardaar and Golmaal 3 when we so loved him for his role of ‘Sultan’ in Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and the one in Omkara. Just one piece of advice, we all love you and know you are a great actor and you don’t need to go the Salman way to prove it.

As far as Tamanaah is concerned, if I have got her spelling right, considering the number of added vowels, nothing except her body is catching the eyes. To even compare her with legendary Sridevi would do Tamanaah a lot of injustice because the girl’s nowhere close.

And Paresh Rawal for God sake, if there is one comedian (real one) left in this country, it is you. Your ridiculous looks and performance will make people sob, leave laughing. You just did Oh My God, at least could have tried to live up to the reputation.

As far as Sajid Khan is concerned, the less said the better. One should actually stop asking Sachin Tendulkar and ask Sajid his retirement age. He is the one special man who could have actually picked up an already bad movie and made it so pathetic. Hats off entertainer, only you could have proudly boasted it to be “A Sajid Khan Entertainer” during the end credits.

My last words: either say a big NO or watch it at your own risk because this one has all the ingredients to turn you into a lunatic.
