Raanjhnaa: Love Story With a Twist

3 Stars

Will Dhanush carry Rajnikant’s legacy forward? Probably not! Rajnikant’s larger-than-life image is slightly difficult to emulate. But, Dhanush might just create a legacy of his own, given the kind of performance he had to offer in Raanjhanaa.

The story of Raanjhanaa is that of a lover, who is madly, badly, completely besotted with a girl since childhood. Unlike most childhood infatuations, this love story does not fade into oblivion with time. While the girl grows up and goes to a different city (Delhi) to study, the boy remains in Benaras and waits for his Lady Love to return! An atypical love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl, Kundan and Zoya, Raanjhanaa is not just about romance. On one hand the movie charms you with the small details – the colors and culture of Benaras, the cuteness and innocence attached with childhood romance, while on the other, it grips you with its political statements on communalism.

Actors and Acting

Quite authentic, slightly exaggerated, Director Aanand Rai has made every effort to make the movie look real. And he has been successful, primarily due to his star cast. Although the chemistry between the lead actors weren’t great, Dhanush acted wonderfully as a crass, love-smitten roadside-romeo. Sonam Kapoor looked beautifully delicate even in regular clothes. While her acting skills seem to have been polished to a great extent, she seems to be not- much-at-ease while doing the socio-political scenes. But of course, her self-consciousness can also be credited to the actor she has been paired with in the political scenes – Abhay Deol. Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub have also been acclaimed for their roles.

The Melody King of Bollywood, A R Rahman’s understanding of tender human emotions, especially love and despair, is exemplary. As always, Rahman has given a part of himself to the songs. If there is magic in the movie, it is probably because of Rahman’s songs playing to the heartbeats of Kundan.

Overall, the movie has a talented star cast, an iconic music director and a director who now has another hit movie to his credit.
